Ernie Moss to be remembered at Matlock match

Spireites legend and former Matlock Town manager Ernie Moss will be remembered when Chesterfield face the Gladiators in the upcoming pre-season friendly at the Proctor Cars Stadium on Saturday, July 16 (3pm).

The teams will be playing for the Ernie Moss Challenge Cup, with the winning team receiving the silverware from members of Ernie’s family.

Ernie’s daughter Sarah said: “It was the idea of two of our friends, Darrell Clarke and Andy from Not Just T Shirts on Derby Road, Chesterfield, who discussed this after the game last year.

“They wanted to provide a trophy and call it the Ernie Moss Challenge Cup. Andy offered to pay for it, which is a fantastic gesture.

“We agreed it would be great if it could be presented to the winners of the Matlock v Chesterfield game, so our family will present it to the winners on a yearly basis.”

Ernie made 539 appearances for the Spireites in three spells, netting a record 192 goals. He played briefly for Matlock before being appointed the Gladiators manager in 2001, leading them to second place in the NPL First Division and promotion in 2003/04 in a season when Matlock also lifted the Derbyshire Senior Cup.

“Dad loved his time at both Chesterfield and Matlock Town so this really is a fitting tribute,” added Sarah.

“As a family we would be absolutely honoured for this to happen and to keep Dad’s memory alive.”

Admission prices for the game are £10 for adults, £6.50 for concessions (over 65), £5 for students (with valid card), £3 for children aged 11-16, and free for children aged ten and under.
