Following a disappointing weekend defeat to Colchester United, the Spireites have an opportunity to bounce back in the Vertu Trophy with a group-stage fixture against Burton Albion this evening (7pm).
Paul Cook’s side are looking to get off the mark in Northern Group H following a loss in their opening match of the competition against Crewe Alexandra.
After an emphatic 5-0 win over tonight’s opposition during pre-season, they have every reason to be confident going into the game.
In the spotlight
Fabio Tavares played a big role in Burton’s resurgence in the second half of the 2024/25 Sky Bet League One season whilst on loan from Coventry City, earning himself a permanent move to the Brewers in the summer.
After two-goal contributions in the first two games of the season, the 24-year-old was also on the scoresheet when Gary Bowyer’s side overcame Liverpool U21 2-0 to win their opening Vertu Trophy game, and will be a danger if he features at the SMH Group Stadium.
Paddy Byrne’s pre-match thoughts
“We’re going to fully attack the game, we’ll be using a full first-team squad within the game.
“We want to go and give a better account of ourselves than we did at the weekend, so we’ll be looking to come into the game strong and on the front-foot.”
