It’s set to be a huge day out for the whole club on Saturday, when the Spireites take on the European champions, Chelsea FC, at Stamford Bridge. The Spireites currently sit top of the National League, while Chelsea are second in the Premier League! With a busy fixture list for Chelsea over the coming weeks, they could potentially field a weaker side than normal, however, the Spireites faithful could still be set to see some of Chelsea’s superstars.

The Spireites will certainly have to be at their best if they want to overcome the European champions, so James Rowe will have to think carefully about his team selection.

Some unfortunate news this week is that Jack Clarke confirmed on his Twitter page that he ruptured his hamstring against FC Halifax Town. The midfielder went under the knife in the week.

Gaving Gunning will be hoping he can start the fixture after being taken off in the second half last time out due to fatigue. Fellow defender Tyrone-Williams will not feature in the side as he is cup-tied.

Liam Mandeville is in red-hot form and will be hoping he has done enough over recent weeks to cement his place in the side with Saidou Khan and Jim Kellermann likewise hoping to start.

Scott Loach will be looking to start between the sticks. The stopper played against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge back in 2010.

On Chelsea

Chelsea are one of the biggest football clubs in the world and they compete on an international stage. They compete in the top division of English football, the Premier League. They currently sit in second place, hoping to be crowned champions at the end of the season, while also fighting for trophies in other competitions such as the Carabao Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

They were established in 1905 and won their first major honour in 1955, winning the League championship. To this day they have now won five Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions League titles and two UEFA Europa League titles. They are currently classed as the best team in Europe, after winning last year’s Champions League. Chelsea are one of five clubs across the globe to have won all three of UEFA’s main club competitions, they are also first English club to achieve the UEFA treble. Furthermore, they are the only club to have won all three major European competitions twice.

Chelsea have won the FA Cup a staggering eight times!

Chelsea are the sixth most valuable football club in the world, believed to be worth a staggering £2.13 billion! They are owned by Russian Israeli billionaire, Roman Abramovich, who took over the club back in 2003.

Based on attendance figures, Chelsea are the sixth best supported club in the UK, as their stadium currently holds just under 41,000 spectators. Their fans travel in large numbers across the country and oversees when they play in international tournaments. Chelsea have long-standing rivals with Arsenal and Tottenham.

One to watch

Where do you start? Chelsea have many international superstars who have played for some of the best clubs across the globe. Their team is filled with incredible amounts of talent, with squad depth like no other. They are stacked with highly rated players who have represented both their club and country on the big stage.

There are plenty of players to choose from, but here’s who we’ve gone for: Romelu Lukaku!

Romelu Lukaku is a world-class footballer, who represents his club and country as a striker. The 6ft 3inch striker has bags of talent and has already scored over 250 professional goals at the age of just 28. He started his career in Belgium at Anderlecht, scoring 33 goals in 73 appearances, earning him a move to Chelsea. He went on to make just 10 appearances for Chelsea the first-time round, with loan moves to West Brom and Everton to get more game time, he would eventually sign for the latter in 2014 after four years at Chelsea.

He scored 15 goals for Everton in 31 appearances, and after making international headlines for his goalscoring ability, the striker was rewarded with a move to one of the biggest clubs in the world, Manchester United. He made 66 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 28 goals. After a tough end to his time in Manchester, Lukaku moved oversees to Inter Milan, where his impressive goalscoring record continued, hitting the back of the net 47 times in just 72 appearances. In the summer of 2021, Lukaku was bought for near 100 million pounds by Chelsea, meaning he would return to his boyhood club for a second time. So far, he has made 13 appearances this campaign, scoring five goals.

Lukaku also represents his country, Belgium. He has made over 100 appearances for his country, scoring 68 goals. He has featured in many international tournaments, including the World Cup.

The Spireites’ last three: (W/D/W)

Won – Grimsby Town 0-1 Chesterfield – National League

Drew – Chesterfield 1-1 Halifax – National League

Won – Chesterfield 1-0 King’s Lynn – National League

The Blues’ last three: (W/D/D)

Won – Aston Villa 1-3 Chelsea – Premier League

Drew – Chelsea 1-1 Brighton – Premier League

Drew – Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool – Premier League

The Spireites last met with Chelsea all the way back in February 1950. Chelsea were victorious that day, winning 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup. This will be the first meeting between the two clubs for over 70 years.

Interestingly, Chesterfield first met Chelsea back in 1905, where the Spireites famously beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and became the first team ever to win at their famous stadium!
