Spireites come from behind to win

The Spireites came from a goal down to beat Gateshead 2-1 at the Technique Stadium. Goals from Joe Quigley and Liam Mandeville secured an important three points.

Tyrone Williams had the Spireites’ first chance of the game, following a corner, but his header went over the bar.

Gateshead’s Owen Bailey tried his luck from the edge of the box; however, he dragged his attempt wide of the post.

Gateshead took the lead in the 20th minute through their captain Greg Olley. Olley picked up the ball around 20 yards out on the left-hand side and bent the ball into the bottom corner.

The Spireites equalised in the 22nd minute. Mandeville ran down the right-hand side and crossed the ball to Quigley, who headed the ball into the bottom corner.

Armando Dobra came close to putting the Spireites into the lead when an attempted cross grazed the crossbar before going out for a goal kick.

Dobra came close again when Mandeville drilled the ball across the box, Dobra slid in to put the ball away, but an unfortunate bobble meant he put the ball over.

The Spireites thought they’d taken the lead but Quigley’s 34thminute goal was disallowed for an offside in the build-up.

Mandeville put the Spireites into the lead in the 47th minute. The ball fell to him on the right-hand side of the penalty area, and he curled the ball into the corner of the goal.

Quigley almost doubled the Spireites’ lead with a point-blank header, following a corner, but James Montgomery made a fantastic save.

Montgomery then made a superb double save, following attempts from Darren Oldaker and Mandeville.

Mandeville had a chance for the Spireites after running down the right-hand side towards goal, but his attempt brushed the side netting.

After this impressive victory, attention will now turn to this Saturday’s FA Cup home fixture against Northampton Town.
