The Spireites were denied three points by two late goals as they drew 2-2 with Altrincham at the Technique Stadium.
Liam Mandeville and Kabongo Tshimanga put the Blues two goals to the good at the break, but Matthew Kosylo and A-Jay Leitch-Smith gave the away side a point.
James Rowe made just the one change as Jeff King, who picked up a knock against Solihull Moors, was replaced by Mandeville in a straight swap.
After a slow start to the first half, Chesterfield started to turn the screw and almost took the lead when Saidou Khan took aim and fired over from the edge of the area.
However, the home faithful would soon be celebrating. Mandeville made a strong run to the 18-yard box and saw his left-footed strike loop over Anthony Thompson and into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
It wasn’t all the Spireites’ way though as Altrincham threatened to find a quick equaliser. A nice one-two down the left-hand side between Conor Hampson and Matthew Kosylo allowed the former to send a low cross that was cleared away by Jamie Grimes.
Grimes soon gave away an in-direct free-kick after his backpass was handled by Scott Loach. Kosylo laid the ball off to Ryan Colclough, who was denied by the mid-section the Blues goalkeeper.
Chesterfield found a second goal a couple of minutes before the break. Mandeville’s corner was headed goalwards by Grimes before Tshimanga provided a deft touch past Thompson.
Rowe made a half-time substitution as Manny Oyeleke was replaced by fellow midfielder Jak McCourt.
The start of the second period saw the visitors threaten through Colclough and Kosylo. The former’s effort was saved by Loach and the latter’s 25-yard shot was deflected just wide of the mark.
Defender Luke Croll went down just before the hour-mark and looked as though he would have to come off. However, he was fine and upon his return to the pitch immediately stopped an attack from Altrincham.
Mandeville was providing the possibility of good chances with his floated corners. One such set piece with ten minutes to go found Croll, but his header was off target.
With just over five minutes to go, Altrincham pulled a goal back. Kosylo’s 25-yard effort trickled past Loach and found the net via the post.
Despite resolve from the Chesterfield defence, Altrincham found a leveller in added time. As the game ticked over into the fifth minute of added time, substitute Leitch-Smith fired a powerful effort past Loach for a share of the spoils.
