Spireites suffer first defeat of season

The Spireites went down to their first defeat of the season, losing 3-1 at Woking after Saidou Khan’s wonder strike had given them a first-half lead.

James Rowe made three changes to the side held 2-2 at home to Torquay United on Saturday with Jamie Grimes, Jeff King and Saidou Khan replacing Laurence Maguire, George Carline and Jak McCourt.

In very difficult conditions, with rain teeming down in Surrey, Jeff King tried a long-range effort early on which went wide.

Khan put the Spireites in front in the 12th minute, showing great awareness to chip Craig Ross with an effort from inside his own half, the keeper helping the ball into the back of the net as he raced back to try and keep it out. What a goal!

Woking’s first effort of note came from George Oakley, who headed over from Tahvon Campbell’s cross.

Kabongo Tshimanga saw his shot deflected for a corner after he got on the end of a cross from Liam Mandeville.

Woking put the ball in the back of the net but their celebrations were cut short after the referee ruled that a foul had been committed.

Mandeville then tried an effort from distance which went well wide.

Max Kretzschmar threatened with a shot which hit the side netting.

Khan put a low shot on target but it lacked the power to test Ross.

Woking finished the half strongly with Scott Loach forced to turn away Kretzschmar’s free-kick.

The keeper then pulled off two good saves and Woking struck the bar with a header shortly before the half-time whistle.

After producing another fine stop, Loach was finally beaten when Tahvon Campbell (64) went past Grimes on the right-hand side of the area before firing under the keeper.

A double substitution in the 77th minute saw McCourt and Danny Rowe replace Mandeville and Stefan Payne.

A chance fell to Khan who shot wide from inside the area.

Campbell headed wide before putting the hosts in front in the 86th minute with a low drive.

Substitute Inih Effiong added a third for Woking a minute from time with a shot from inside the area.

Carline headed wide in stoppage time.
