Spireites win at Yeovil

The Spireites secured a third successive win at Huish Park with a 1-0 Halloween day win over Yeovil Town thanks to Tom Denton’s sixth goal of the season.

John Pemberton made two changes from the FA Cup tie last weekend with Jamie Sharman and Jonathan Smith replacing Josef Yarney and Jordan Cropper.

Both sides struggled to create chances with the defences standing firm and coming out on top.

Yeovil created the first chance of the game after 17 minutes when Joe Quigley’s cross was headed wide of the goal by Matty Warburton.

The first chance for Chesterfield came with less than five minutes of the first half left. Tom Denton flicked the ball onto Alex Kiwomya but the forward’s shot was held Adam Smith.

The Spireites ended the half on top, looking the more dangerous side. However, the score was still goalless at the break.

Eight minutes into the second half, Jonathan Smith was presented with a fantastic opportunity to open the scoring. The midfielder latched onto a cross but his goalbound header was fantastically saved by Adam Smith.

Luke Rawson was brought on for Nathan Tyson in the 68th minute. Just a minute later, the young striker fed Tom Denton who composed himself in the area and lashed the ball into the roof of the net.

The Spireites were presented with task to hold on to the lead for the remaining 20 minutes. Albio Skendi’s close-range header was deflected over Kyle Letheren and onto the roof of the net.

Chesterfield almost doubled the lead with just three minutes to go; Laurence Maguire connected with a free-kick at the back post, but his header flew wide of the mark.

Pemberton’s side continued to stand as a united front and defended the lead brilliantly to secure a second win in the National League this season.
