The Spireites went down to a second successive defeat after falling 1-0 away to Boreham Wood.
Paul Cook made four changes from last Saturday’s defeat at Barnet as Ryheem Sheckleford, Branden Horton, Ollie Banks and Liam Mandeville returned to the starting XI.
The Spireites had a host of chances early on and were unlucky not to find themselves in front. Boreham Wood’s Nathan Ashmore was first called into action when Ryan Colclough’s heavily deflected cross was tipped over by the goalkeeper.
Armando Dobra soon stung the palms of Ashmore before the shot-stopper somehow produced a pair of saves to deny Liam Mandeville from point-blank range.
From the resulting corner, Jamie Grimes saw his powerful header tipped over the crossbar.
Colclough came close to opening his account just before the half hour mark, he turned his man before sending a low drive on the edge of the area inches wide of the mark.
The number of chances reduced as the break neared as Chesterfield were forced into half time level.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first – with Chesterfield creating the chances. Mandeville’s 25-yard effort failed to trouble Ashmore and cleared the crossbar.
Ollie Banks was the next to try his luck as his powerful effort was pushed away from goal.
Boreham Wood started to grow into the game as the hour mark approached. Two close-range efforts were first denied brilliantly by Covolan and then blocked on the line by Horton.
The hosts soon took the lead when Femi Ilesamni’s low effort was spilled by Covolan, and Josh Rees poked home from close-range.
The Spireites immediately hunted for an equaliser and came close three times within ten minutes. Grimes first struck the post with a glancing header, Quigley then put over from Sheckleford’s in a guilt-edged chance, and Ashmore was there again to deny Mandeville.
Despite pushing for a leveller, the Blues were unable to prevent a defeat on the road.
