The club is sad to report the passing of Jean Yates who, at 101, is thought to be Chesterfield’s oldest-ever season ticket holder.
Jean first came to games as a four-year-old in the 1927/28 season at a time when the club’s league opponents included Durham City, Nelson and Ashington.
During the 1940s she was the girlfriend of two Chesterfield players, firstly Dickie Cushlow and then Dudley Milligan, the Irish international player.
Her attendance at matches was reduced when she moved away from the town, but she again became a regular from 1968. Initially she then came with her sons and daughter but then started to bring her granddaughter, Sarah, when she was four. Sarah still came to matches with Jean until the end of last season.
As she was already a season ticket holder at the new stadium, the club refused to charge for her ticket when she reached her 100th birthday. Our thoughts are with Sarah and others who knew Jean.
Jean is pictured on the pitch at the SMHGroup Stadium when Chesterfield won the National League title when she was 100 years-old.
