Match Preview: Accrington Stanley (A)

The Spireites travel to Lancashire to face Accrington Stanley on Saturday afternoon at the Wham Stadium.

The Spireites were defeated 3-0 last time out at the hands of Oldham Athletic. Paul Cook’s side will look to make things right and climb back into the play-off positions on Saturday.

Stanley also suffered a heavy 4-0 loss at home in midweek, and currently sit 15th in the League Two table.

In the Spotlight

Paddy Madden and Luke Butterfield are both on loan at Accrington Stanley this season, but will not be in contention to play against their parent club on Saturday.

Shaun Whalley operates as an attacking midfielder for Stanley. He has four goals and seven assists to his name this season.

Whalley’s most impressive strike came in a 3-1 win against Cheltenham Town, from 30 yards out.

The gaffer’s record

Paul Cook has managed 13 games against Accrington Stanley in his career, winning five, drawing two and losing six.

The Spireites faced Stanley at the Wham Stadium in the final game of League Two last season, winning 1-0, which ultimately sent Cook’s side into the play-offs.

Cook has also played for and managed Accrington Stanley. His managerial stint ran from February until October in 2012, taking charge of 31 games.

Man in the middle

Harry Wager will be the official on Saturday afternoon, assisted by Mark Cunliffe, Paul Newhouse and fourth official, Joe Simpson.

Wager has never taken charge of a game involving Chesterfield in his career, with the majority of his career games coming in the National League South.

In six League Two games this season, Wager has produced 28 yellow cards but no red cards.

Kieron Dyer’s thoughts

“There’s been a lot of home truths said. Obviously, we review games, good and bad. Notts County, we classed as a really good performance; Bristol Rovers, we classed as a really good away performance.

“We need to win the game. We’ve had a really tough two days because everyone’s hurting. But, as I said, we’re fed up of talking now. We’ve got to start doing it, start showing it. So, hopefully, it starts on Saturday.”
