Match preview: MK Dons (h)

Stadium

The Spireites look to continue their unbeaten home record in League Two when they welcome MK Dons to the SMH Group Stadium.

Paul Warne’s side have had an indifferent start to the season but sit just two points off the play-offs.

Chesterfield have never beaten the visitors in North Derbyshire so will be looking to right that wrong.

In the Spotlight

Callum Paterson has been a shining light for MK Dons in their opening eight games of the season.

He not only leads the way in the club’s goalscoring charts but also their assist charts as well.

The 17-time Scotland international has won promotion at every club he has been at in – Heart of Midlothian, Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday.

If he plays, it will be the first time that Paterson will come up against the Spireites in his career.

The gaffer’s record

MK Dons have come up as opposition plenty of times for Paul Cook – this weekend marks his 11th fixture against them.

A frequent rival from his first spell at Chesterfield, he has recorded five wins, two draws and three defeats in those meetings.

Three of those wins came at Stadium MK the 2014/15 season, including two wins in the FA Cup.

Man in the middle

Edward Duckworth will take charge of the fixture, assisted by Ashley Allen and Bradley Hall – with Richard Wigglesworth as the fourth official.

He has refereed one match involving Chesterfield during his career as of yet, a 0-0 away draw against Solihull Moors in 2023.

Overall, Duckworth has been the main official on 138 occasions, handing out 502 yellow cards, 23 red cards and giving 28 penalties.

Gary Roberts’ thoughts

“They’ve got a really good team on paper. They’ve signed some really strong players, big names. The pressure comes with budgets and whatever they spend, but you’re still 11 v 11.

“They’ve got some really good players. I don’t think they’ve really clicked yet because they’ve had a couple of injuries. We’ve seen quite a bit of them, but on their day they’re a really good team.”
