On York City
In May 1922, the club was founded under the name York City Association Football and Athletic Club and were originally assigned to the Midland League.
York soon became a member of the Football League, a place they would call home for many years. They also reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1955 as a Third Division club – before losing to Newcastle United.
The Minstermen bounced between the National League and League Two during the 2000s and also won two FA Trophies in 2012 and 2017.
In 2017, York were relegated to the National League North for the first time. After four seasons in the sixth tier, John Askey and co were promoted back to the National league after a 2-0 victory over Boston United in the play-off final.
It’s been a tough first season back in the National League in York with issues both on and off the pitch. Michael Morton’s side are looking to secure their place in the fifth tier for the 2023/23 season.
One to watch
Shaq Forde joined the Minstermen back in December on loan from Championship side Watford and has become one of the most important parts of Michael Morton’s side. The 18-year-old joined Kings Langley on a short-term loan last campaign and scored two goals in three appearances. Forde has impressed York fans scoring seven goals in 14 appearances as the Yorkshire side continue in their push for survival.
