Narrow defeat

The Spireites fell to another defeat on the road as they lost 1-0 to Colchester United at the JobServe Community Stadium.

After an uneventful first period, John-Kymani Gordon scored the only goal on the hour to give the home side the victory.

Six changes were made from Saturday as Ryheem Sheckleford, Tom Naylor, Ollie Banks, Liam Mandeville, Bailey Hobson and Dylan Duffy were brought into the starting XI.

Colchester enjoyed the early exchanges in the first half as they looked to test Ryan Boot in the Chesterfield goal.

Jack Payne was thwarted twice by the shot-stopper with the home side’s first two chance before Ellis Iandolo’s thunderous half-volley was palmed away by Boot.

The away side were forced to settle for half chances as the Colchester defence held firm.

On the hal- hour mark, Duffy found some space to run into before cutting the ball back for

Hobson, who unfortunately blazed his effort over.
Chesterfield started the second half on the front foot as they searched for the opener in Essex.

Mandeville tried his luck from the edge of the area, but his shot went just wide of Matt Macey’s goal.

Gordon saw his deflected shot bobble off the post before being cleared for a corner.

As the clock ticked into the 60th minute, the hosts scored from the resulting corner. A short set-piece was then whipped in for Gordon to head past Boot at the back post.

Chesterfield looked to find a quick response; substitute Ryan Colclough’s cross/shot was parried away by Macey.

A minute later, Madden then found himself in space at the edge of the area and sent a low shot inches wide.

The forward was shown a red card just before added time after a strong challenge on Samson Tovide.
