Narrow defeat in testimonial match

The Spireites lost 2-1 at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday for Drew Talbot’s testimonial at the SMH Group Stadium. A first-half goal from Jeff King was not enough to give the Spireites the win in their third pre-season friendly.

The Spireites started the game well, keeping possession and putting pressure on Sheffield Wednesday.

Despite an entertaining first 25 minutes neither side had managed to create any clear-cut chances.

Jamie Grimes tried his luck from range, but his attempt went wide of the goal.

The Spireites took the lead in the 36th minute with a goal from King. King ran into the box from the right-hand side and his low cross found its way into the net.

Harry Tyrer made a great save, following a header from Luke Cook from inside the box.

The Spireites came close to doubling their lead when Tom Naylor headed the ball towards goal, forcing a good save from Cameron Dawson, following a free kick from the left-hand side.

The Spireites went into half time with a 1-0 lead.

Wednesday equalised in the 47th minute when substitute Lee Gregory connected with a cross from the right-hand side, looping it over Tyrer on the volley.

The sides were still locked at 1-1 going into the final 15 minutes with neither side able to assert themselves in the game.

The Spireites came close towards the end of the game when Jesurun Uchegbulam’s header hit the crossbar, following a cross from Ryheem Sheckleford.

Wednesday scored the winner in the 90th minute when Gregory added his second of the game with an easy tap-in at the back post.

The Spireites’ attention will now turn to their next pre-season fixture against Premier League side Sheffield United on Saturday.
