Summer signing, Alfie Pond, sat down to reflect on his transition to becoming a Spireite after he made his first appearance last weekend.
Pond initially focused on his debut last week saying, “Obviously I was really happy to get my first chance and my first start, and I thought for the majority I did alright.
“I am only going to get fitter with the more I play, so I think it will only get better from there.”
As a new face in the group, Pond discussed the importance of partnerships as centre-backs and said, “I have been playing a lot with Simmo [Jack Simpson] across pre-season but it might change and I might end playing alongside others more and it will always be about building these relationships.
“Kyle [McFadzean] and Simmo obviously have more experience than me, and they have a lot more games under their belt which is something I don’t have yet, but I am growing every day and hopefully with more minutes I can get better and better.”
The 22-year-old then commented on his time with Paul Cook since joining the club. “It’s been really good, I enjoyed it so far and all the coaching staff to be fair, from the first day I came in I felt welcome and part of the group so credit to all off the staff and the lads as well.”
Chesterfield is the seventh club Pond has now played for, and he spoke about what it’s like to try and find regular first team football. “I have had to be patient in previous years, with loans and stuff.
“I had four or five months last year where I got regular first team football, but I have not had that full Saturday, Tuesday experience in my career so far. It is definitely going to be a change, but it is something I will certainly take when I get the chance to be involved in the matches.
“I don’t want to look too much into the past with it all. It is all about the present day and focusing on that. It is unusual to be in this situation being a 22-year-old and not having a full season, but this is where I find myself and I will just get on with it.”
He finished the interview by discussing what has been a busy transfer window for the Spireites. “I think we are in a really good place. Everyone is building relationships, building partnerships and I only think this group is going to get stronger and stronger.”
