Spireites advance in FA Cup

The Spireites secured a fantastic 1-0 win over League One Leyton Orient. The win sees the Spireites progress to the third round of the Emirates FA Cup with an away tie against Watford.

A first-half own goal from Brandon Cooper was the only goal of the game.

Paul Cook made two changes to the team who faced Eastleigh, with Ryan Boot and Ryheem Sheckleford coming in for Harry Tyrer and Ryan Colclough.

It was a cagey encounter in the opening 15 minutes, with neither side creating any clear-cut opportunities.

Darren Oldaker tried his luck from the edge of the box, but his curling effort went wide of the post.

Will Grigg managed to get a back heeled effort on target, following a corner, but Sol Brynn in the Orient goal made a good save from close range.

The Spireites came close through Jamie Grimes when he rose the highest to head the ball towards goal, following a corner, but Brynn managed to catch his effort.

Tom James forced Boot into making a good save after a powerful effort from around 25 yards out.

The Spireites took the lead in the 39th minute thanks to a freak own goal by Cooper. Ollie Banks curled the ball towards goal, and it deflected off the defender’s head and into the top corner.

The Spireites went into half time with a 1-0 lead.

Grimes managed to get a header on goal which forced a good save, following a wide freekick.

The Spireites had a great chance to double their lead when Grigg won the ball high up the pitch and crossed it into Armando Dobra, but the connection of his header was not clean, and Brynn made a save.

After this great win, attention will now turn to next Saturday’s FA Trophy game against Southport.
