Chesterfield lost in a penalty shoot-out to Matlock Town as they got their pre-season programme underway in the Ernie Moss Challenge Cup. After it finished goal-less at the end of 90 minutes, Ryan Colclough was the unlucky player who failed to score from the spot.
The starting line-up featured one new face with Paddy Madden included in the forward line.
Branden Horton had a first minute header saved while Madden’s cross found Joe Quigley whose glancing header went wide. Armando Dobra then put a curling effort wide.
A substitution just after the half-hour mark saw Kane Drummond come on for his first appearance in a Spireites shirt as a replacement for Quigley.
James Berry tried his luck from distance with his effort going well over the bar.
Wholesale changes were made at the break with summer recruits Chey Dunkley, Lewis Gordon and Tim Akinola among those joining the action.
Ryan Colclough struck the woodwork after connecting with a Liam Jessop cross.
Dunkley then headed over from Liam Mandeville’s corner.
Will Grigg also came on as a substitute around the hour-mark, taking over from Drummond.
Jessop’s cross picked out Grigg, who failed to direct his header on target.
Three further changes were made with Connor Cook, Ali Mohiuddin and Bailey Hobson coming on.
Mohiuddin put a long-range strike off-target in the closing stages.
