Spireites win at Matlock

The Spireites made a winning start to pre-season by winning the Ernie Moss Challenge Cup after a 2-0 win at Matlock Town.

Goals from Joe Quigley and Armando Dobra in either half ensured a good performance at the Proctor Cars Stadium.

Paul Cook named several new signings on the starting XI with Dobra, Lucas Covolan, Branden Horton, Darren Oldaker and Ollie Banks featuring.

The opening exchanges saw both teams work hard with the defences coming out on top.

Matlock came close to scoring just before the water break; Alex Byrne had Covolan beaten with a nice half-volley but the ball drifted wide of the goal.

Dobra was a bright spark for Chesterfield as he looked to loop a header into the far post – his effort was saved by Jim Pollard.

However, the deadlock was soon broken. Dobra played in Liam Mandeville with a perfectly weighted pass and the midfielder found Quigley who slid the ball home from close range.

The Spireites continued to pile pressure on the home defence. Mandeville’s curling effort was palmed to Quigley; he played the ball to Dobra but the winger failed to connect with the shot.

As half time approached, Horton was played through down the left. A cross found Quigley at the back post but the striker skewed his volley wide.

The Blues looked to continue their dominance in the second period and almost got off to the perfect start as Tyrone Williams headed wide from a corner.
Banks came close to marking his return with a goal as his 25-yard piledriver whistled agonisingly past a post

On the hour-mark, Michael Gyasi, who replaced Asante at the break, then also came close to his first goal for the club but he put his effort just wide.

The lead was soon doubled as Mandeville found the ever-threatening Dobra and the new signing slotted the ball into the back of the net.

There were several changes in the second half with a number of the new signings getting some minutes under their belts. Ryheem Sheckleford, Joe Cook, Bailey Clements and George Cooper all made their first appearances in front of the Spireites faithful.

The Spireites came close twice to increasing the lead late on; Tom Whelan’s scuffed effort was almost turned on by Gyasi but it was well saved. Cook then headed just over from the resulting corner.

Chesterfield XI: Covolan; King (Sheckleford 63), Williams (Cook 63), Grimes (C) (Maguire 63), Horton (Clements 63); Oldaker (Whelan 67), Banks (Trialist 67); Mandeville (Trialist 83), Asante (Gyasi 46 (Trialist 87)), Dobra (Miller 67); Quigley (Cooper 67).
