Spireites win at Shrewsbury

Lee Bonis scored the only goal of the game to send the Spireites to a 1-0 win against Shrewsbury Town at the Croud Meadow.

After an uneventful first half, Bonis’ tenth goal of the campaign was enough to bring the three points back to North Derbyshire.

Paul Cook made no changes to the side that beat Barnet last Saturday – with the bench also staying the same.

Former Spireite Sam Clucas threatened early on with a pari of chances; one was saved by Zach Hemming and the other was fired over the crossbar.

Both sides struggled to create any opportunities after that as the game turned into a scrappy affair.

Dylan Duffy rolled the ball to Bonis at the edge of the area with five minutes to go until half time; the forward’s subsequent shot failed to trouble Will Brook in the Shrewsbury goal.

A lofted ball into the Chesterfield penalty area did cause a bit of trouble as the clocked ticked past the 45th minute. Hemming and Will Boyle contested the ball in the area with the latter nudging the former – Hemming was able to knock the ball away at the second attempt.

Seven minutes into the second half, Tommy McDermott latched onto a flick on before sending a half-volley narrowly wide of the Chesterfield goal.

The away side started to find more joy getting up the pitch following that chance and came close to finding an opener when Bonis flicked Ronan Darcy’s bobbling cross past the wrong side of the post.

However, the Northen Irishman would soon get his goal. Lewis Gordon’s pass allowed Bonis to turn his man before slotting the ball past Will Brook and into the bottom right corner.

Following the goal, the pace of the game slowed down as Chesterfield looked to defend their lead.

Despite this, substitutes James Berry and Will Grigg had chances to seal the victory, but their efforts went wide and were cleared respectively.

The three points mean that Chesterfield will spend Christmas in the League Two play-off places.
