Spireites sign experienced central defender

It has been confirmed that Chey Dunkley has joined the club on a three-year deal following the expiry of his contract at Shrewsbury Town, subject to approval from the governing bodies.

Dunkley started his career with Crewe Alexandra before going on to play for Hednesford Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Oxford United, Wigan Athletic and Sheffield Wednesday, before joining Shrewsbury in 2022.

Last August, the experienced central defender was named as Shrewsbury’s captain and played almost 50 games in all competitions over the course of the campaign, scoring four goals.

He has made two appearances for the England C side and was named in the Jamaica squad for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Dunkley is no stranger to Paul Cook having played in his Wigan squad from 2017 to 2020 – alongside Ryan Colclough, Michael Jacobs and Will Grigg.

After putting pen to paper, Dunkley said: “”I’m buzzing to be here, it’s such a great club to sign for.

“Working with the gaffer before, I know that I’m going to be looked after.

“The season will come round quickly, I’m ready to go.

“I can’t wait, it’s going to be a good season and I’m excited to get going.

“I look forward to meeting all the supporters and people at the club.”

Dunkley is the fifth signing since the end of last season, joining Tim Akinola, Kane Drummond, Lewis Gordon and Paddy Madden.
