Spireites win at Scunthorpe

The Spireites brought the curtain down on pre-season with a comfortable 3-0 win against Scunthorpe United at the Attis Arena.

Michael Jacobs, Ryan Colclough and Liam Mandeville all scored in the first half to take the game away from the hosts.

It didn’t take long for the visitors to go into the lead. A short corner allowed Mandeville to find Jacobs on the edge of the box and the attacking midfielder brilliantly curled the ball beyond Ross Fitzsimons with the outside of his foot.

The lead was doubled in the 18th minute; Armando Dobra brought a looping ball from Ollie Banks ball down before passing to Will Grigg. The striker fed in Colclough, who fired the ball home from close-range.

Ryan Boot was tested a couple of times by Scunthorpe as he stayed alert to deny Kian Scales on a couple of occasions.

However, Chesterfield found a third goal soon after when Colclough’s chipped cross was slotted into the back of the net at the back post by Mandeville.

A corner caused havoc in the area which allowed Chey Dunkley to hook the ball towards the goal line – Ross Barrows headed the effort off the line.

Grigg thought he had added a fourth just before the break when he tapped home from Colclough’s low cross. Unfortunately for the striker, the linesman’s flag ruled the goal out.

The second period brought less in the way of chances; Boot produced an early save to deny Carlton Ubaezuonu.

Paul Cook made wholesale changes throughout the half with players getting their final minutes of pre-season.

Joe Quigley was denied late on when his header was clawed away by Fitzsimons.

The win concludes the end of pre-season with the opening game against Swindon Town only a week away.
