First Team 2023/24

Ryan Colclough

The winger joined Chesterfield from Altrincham for an undisclosed fee in January. After starting his career at Crewe Alexandra, Colclough had spells at Wigan Athletic and Scunthorpe United before signing for Altrincham in 2020.

Michael Jacobs

Jacobs signed for the Spireites on the eve of the new season. The attacking midfielder played under manager Paul Cook previously, at Wigan Athletic. After starting out at Northampton Town, he played for Derby County and Wolves before signing for Wigan. He then had three years at Portsmouth prior to joining Chesterfield.

Will Grigg

Signed in the summer for an undisclosed fee from MK Dons, Grigg is a Northern Ireland international. After starting out at Walsall, he played for Brentford and Wigan before signing for Sunderland for a reported £3m fee in January 2019. Grigg joined MK Dons in the summer of 2022.

James Berry

The Spireites clinched the signing of Berry from Macclesfield at the start of the season. The young forward, who started out at Hull City, signed a three-year contract after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee. Berry scored 26 goals in 35 appearances last season. He was previously a scholar at Wigan Athletic after being released by Liverpool.

Harley Curtis

Curtis agreed a 12-month contract to join Chesterfield after impressing on trial in pre-season, linking up with former Ipswich team-mates Armando Dobra and Bailey Clements. He also worked with Kieron Dyer during the coach’s spell as U23 boss at Ipswich.

Bailey Hobson

Hobson signed a two-year contract in the summer after agreeing a move from Alfreton Town. He was previously at local side Handsworth after being with Sheffield United as a youngster. Joined Kidderminster Harriers on loan in September.

Tom Naylor

Naylor, who made 36 appearances for Wigan Athletic in the Championship last season, joined the Spireites in the summer. After starting his career at Mansfield Town, Naylor played for the likes of Derby County, Burton Albion and Portsmouth before joining Wigan in the summer of 2021.

Ryan Boot

Boot, who was previously at Solihull Moors, signed a 12-month contract after a spell on trial in pre-season. The shot-stopper started his career at Port Vale and spent five years with the Valiants, During his stint at Vale Park, he spent time out on loan at Worcester City, Norton United, Newcastle Town and Macclesfield Town. Boot joined National League side Solihull Moors in 2018 and made well over 200 appearances as Solihull established themselves as a top fifth-tier side.

Harry Tryer

The young keeper has been signed on a season-long loan from Everton. He impressed while on loan at National League North club Chester last season.

Luke Chadwick

The young keeper joined Chesterfield last summer after being released by Doncaster Rovers.

Ash Palmer

The experienced central defender was signed from Stockport County on an 18-month contract. Palmer spent over four years at Stockport and played a key role in their National League title-winning campaign last season, scoring five goals in 45 appearances in all competitions last season. He joined Stockport from Guiseley in 2018 and his previous clubs include Scunthorpe United, Southport and Buxton.

Paul Cook

Paul Cook returned to the club for a second spell in February, seven years after leaving to take charge at Portsmouth. During his first stint with the Spireites, Cook guided the club to the League Two title and the League One play-offs.

After two years at Portsmouth, during which time they won the League Two title, Cook was named manager of Wigan Athletic.

Three years with Wigan included a League One title win. He later had a nine-month spell with Ipswich Town, which ended in December 2021.

As a player, Cook was a creative midfielder who played for various clubs including Wigan Athletic, Wolves, Coventry City and Burnley.

He began his managerial career at Southport and had stints at Sligo Rovers and Accrington Stanley before joining Chesterfield for the first time.

Mike Jones

Jones joined the Spireites in the summer of 2022 after impressing on trial. The highly experienced midfielder, who has made over 500 appearances in his career, started out at Tranmere Rovers. He had spells at Bury, Sheffield Wednesday, Crawley Town, Carlisle United and Barrow before signing for Chesterfield.

Bailey Clements

The young full-back spent 14 years at boyhood club Ipswich Town before joining Chesterfield last summer. Paul Cook gave Clements his first taste of league football and he appeared eight times for the Tractor Boys in the 2021/22 season. He also had loan spells at Hemel Hempstead, Dagenham & Redbridge and Stevenage.

Ryheem Sheckleford

Sheckleford signed for the Spireites last summer after leaving Maidenhead. He started his career with Fulham, playing for the under-18s, under-19s, under-21s and under-23s. The right-back was part of the Fulham squad that reached the 2014 FA Youth Cup final, losing 7-6 on aggregate to Chelsea. He gained some first-team experience at Wealdstone in 2016 before leaving Craven Cottage in 2017. After a year out of football, Sheckleford joined Maidenhead.

Branden Horton

Horton joined the Spireites last summer after making 20 appearances for Doncaster in League One last season. He spent five years with the South Yorkshire club and had two loan spells with Gainsborough Trinity in the Northern Premier League between 2018 and 2019.

Jeff King

King, who features as a right-sided wing-back, joined Chesterfield in 2021 after winning FC Halifax Town’s Player of the Year award and being named in the Vanarama Team of the Season. King joined Halifax from St Mirren after playing for a number of clubs including Bolton Wanderers.

Jamie Grimes

The central defender joined Chesterfield in 2021 after helping Hereford reach the FA Trophy final at Wembley. The 30-year-old’s former clubs include Ebbsfleet United, Macclesfield Town, Cheltenham Town and Dover Athletic.

Tyrone Williams

Williams was signed from National League rivals Solihull Moors for an undisclosed fee in November 2021. The central defender, who agreed a contract until 2024, joined Solihull in January 2018. He was previously at Kidderminster and Hednesdford.

Darren Oldaker

Oldaker, who joined the Spireites last summer, started his career in Queens Park Rangers’ academy before spending four years with Gillingham. After leaving Priestfield, he had spells at Billericay Town and Westfield. He also spent some time with Welling United, sandwiched in between spells at Hythe Town. Oldaker moved to Dorking in November 2021, immediately becoming a fans’ favourite at Meadowbank, and helped them win the National League South play-offs.

Ollie Banks

Banks rejoined Chesterfield last summer after leaving Barrow. In his first spell at the club, he was instrumental in helping Chesterfield win the 2013/14 League Two title, as well as reaching the 2013/14 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final and the 2014/15 League One play-offs. Banks joined Oldham Athletic in a spell that lasted two years – including loans at Tranmere Rovers and Swindon Town. He joined the former on a permanent basis in 2018 and helped Rovers win promotion from League Two via the play-offs. Banks moved to Barrow in 2021 and was handed the captain’s armband, playing a big part in helping Barrow secure their League Two status for the 2022/23 season.

Armando Dobra

Dobra signed a two-year contract to join Chesterfield last summer after leaving Ipswich Town. The Albania Under-21 international had a season-long loan at Colchester United last term, scoring two goals in 17 appearances.

Liam Mandeville

Mandeville began his career at Doncaster Rovers, coming through the club’s academy before breaking into the first team and making his debut in 2015. He spent a small amount of time on loan at Whitby Town and Colchester, before spending the 2018/19 season on loan at Morecambe. He was released from Doncaster in 2019 and signed for the Spireites ahead of the 2019/20 campaign. Mandeville is a ball-playing midfielder, who plays in an attacking role, but can also play as a striker. He was named Player of the Year at the end of last season.

Joe Quigley

Quigley was signed from National League rivals Yeovil Town in January 2022 for an undisclosed fee. He began his career at Bournemouth and had a number of loan spells before joining Maidstone United in 2018. The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international then played for Bromley and Dagenham & Redbridge before signing for Yeovil in 2020.
