Match preview: Grimsby Town (a)

The Spireites return to League Two action this afternoon, for the first time since New Year’s Day, as they travel to the East coast to face Grimsby Town.

The Mariners currently sit ninth in the table, just one place and three points above the Spireites, but Paul Cook’s side have a game in hand and a better goal difference with the chance to overtake Saturday’s hosts.

Grimsby have failed to win either of their two games so far in 2025, falling to defeats against Accrington Stanley (3-2) and Bradford City (3-1). Today’s game will be the Mariners’ first home fixture at Blundell Park since the turn of the year.

Head-to-head

The Spireites have come up against Grimsby twice already this season, both at the SMH Group Stadium, with Chesterfield coming out on top on both occasions.

The first was a 2-1 win in September in the league and the second was a 3-2 thriller in the Vertu Trophy, with James Berry scoring in both.

The last time the Spireites played at Blundell Park was in December 2021, in the National League, running out 1-0 victors thanks to Kabongo Tshimanga’s late volley.

Manager – David Artell

David Artell was appointed as Grimsby Town manager in November 2023, taking over the permanent reigns from Paul Hurst.

In his what was left of the 2023/24 season, he guided the Mariners to 21st place, avoiding relegation.

This season is Artell’s first full campaign in charge and his side are in pursuit of promotion, currently just three points outside the play-off positions.

Player-in-focus – Danny Rose

Danny Rose is now in his second season at Grimsby and has netted six goals so far this season in League Two, which is the highest of any Mariners player.

The striker was also the club’s top scorer last season with 13 goals in League Two.
