Assistant manager Danny Webb spoke exclusively to 1866+ ahead of the opening pre-season friendly at Matlock Town on Saturday afternoon.
The Spireites are making the annual trip to the Proctor Cars Stadium for the Ernie Moss Challenge Cup and Webb spoke about the importance of the fixture, saying: “It’s a great game for our new players to see what this club means to supporters with how many turn up for a pre-season game.
“It’s sold out and that sums it up. It’s a great time for our fans to see the new players, it’s great for us as staff and players to get that relationship going again with the supporters after a little break.
“Seeing a lot of faces that you recognise that travel here, there and everywhere to watch us on a Saturday afternoon or Tuesday night – we’re all looking forward to that.
“There’s a job to do. Last year it felt a bit rushed, it wasn’t a great game, the pitch was a bit long and it was a weird one.
“They’ve made a few really good signings for their level so they’ll be a tough team. They want to beat us and we want to beat them.”
Looking beyond the match to the rest of the pre-season schedule, he added: “We try and get a good mix most seasons of different oppositions.
“You go from the Matlock game onto Burton which is where we are hoping to get to next season (League One).
“Forest roll into town as well as Sheffield United. We’ve got a mixture of different games that all bring different tests, but for the here and now, we’re all looking forward to getting our tracksuits on as staff and getting back in that dugout.”
The match kicks off at 3pm and is sold-out. If you haven’t got a ticket, don’t forget you can listen to live commentary live on 1866 Sport for free.
