“We will affect the box a lot more”

After the departure of Danny Webb, first-team coach Gary Roberts spoke to the media ahead of the Spireites’ fixture against MK Dons on Saturday afternoon.

Reflecting on Webb’s move to Yeovil Town, Roberts said: “Since the first day I walked through the door, Danny was absolutely spot-on with me. I knew the club a little bit anyway because I’d been here previously, but when you go into a new place it’s a little bit strange.

“I can only speak personally, he’s been absolutely top draw, and I’ll miss him. I will miss him as a person, as someone you lean on and as a fellow coach. He’s a great character and he will be missed here.

“We’ve been through a lot. We’ve had multiple play -offs, we’ve had a heartache at Wembley and we’ve had a win in the National League when we blew the league away –  they’re good memories to have. Danny’s thought that it is the time to go on and have a go himself and we’re right behind him.”

Roberts then commented on last Saturday’s defeat at Walsall, saying: “Last Saturday was disappointing in the sense that we never hit them as we should have done. We never tested their back line; we never put enough pressure on the goal and that hurts us more than anything.

“We thought the goal could have been dealt with better, but Walsall never affected our goal in the game and we’re more disappointed in how we haven’t hurt Walsall.

“We had to put more pressure on them, whichever way that is. We’ve had a good week this week where we will be stronger, we will be better, we will go forward more, we will affect the box a lot more.

“One game doesn’t make us stale, we will still be positive, we pass forward, we play forward, we run forward, and this week has been a good week on the training pitch for us.”

Paul Warne’s MK Dons side are next up for the Spireites, with both sides heading into the fixture on the back of defeats.

“They’ve got a really good team on paper,” Roberts said. “They’ve signed some really strong players, big names. The pressure comes with budgets and whatever they spend, but you’re still 11 v 1.

“They’ve got some really good players. I don’t think they’ve really clicked yet because they’ve had a couple of injuries. We’ve seen quite a bit of them, but on their day they’re a really good team.

“They’ve had a couple of bad results, but they’ll come here now with their tails up. They need to get going and get firing because they’re one of the favourites for the league and with an experienced manager like Paul Warne, they’ll come here expecting to give us a really tough game.”

Giving an injury update, he added: “James Berry won’t be ready. He’s on the training pitch, he’s working hard, he’s just got to tick a few more things off before we get him on the pitch. We’ll possibly try and get a bounce game on the training ground next week and hopefully he can get involved in that, but he won’t be available tomorrow.

“Janoi Donacien is training now. He got injured with us, he stayed with us for his rehab, he’s done all his pitch stuff, he’s done all his running and now he’s in the group fully. If we can get Janoi to stay with us, it’d be great.”
