Match preview: Newport County (h)

The Spireites bring an end to the month of September with a home fixture against Newport County.

Paul Cook’s side currently sit in sixth place whilst the visitors lie just above the relegation zone, in 22nd.

Newport have struggled at the start of the 2025/26 campaign, winning just one of their first nine league games.

In the Spotlight

Despite only joining on transfer deadline day, Nathan Opoku has quickly become an important player for Newport County.

He has two goals in his four games for the Welsh outfit, adding to his two goals scored this season for Leicester City in Premier League 2.

The forward had previously spent the previous time out on loan at Belgian Pro League side OH Leuven during the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns.

Opoku can play as centre-forward but has operated out on the left-hand side for David Hughes’ team.

The gaffer’s record

Paul Cook has a positive record over the years against Newport County, winning five of his nine meetings against them.

For the Spireites, Cook has won two of his four games against Newport, both of which came last term.

His teams have scored 14 goals and conceded 12 when coming up against the Welsh opposition.

Man in the middle

Stephen Parkinson will be the man in the middle for Saturday’s fixture, taking charge of eighth match of the season.

He has been the main official for two Chesterfield games, both coming in the 2023/24 campaign – the 2-1 away defeat to Southend United and the 2-1 away win at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Overall, in his 123 matches, Parkinson has handed out 459 yellow cards, 19 red cards and given 32 penalties.

Kieron Dyer’s thoughts

“Obviously we’ve studied them. Their performances have been actually better than the results. They could have been three-nil up against Gillingham. They have their threats.

“We should go out there, we should stamp our authority, we have to get the three points. It’s not a must-win game at this stage of the season, but we haven’t won in five.”
