Match preview: Colchester United (a)

The Spireites start October with a long journey to the JobServe Community Stadium to take on Colchester United.

Three points for Paul Cook’s side will bring up his 100th victory in his second spell as Chesterfield manager.

On the other hand, Colchester will be looking for a victory to move them further away from the relegation zone.

In the Spotlight

Kyreece Lisbie joined Colchester United from Brentford in February 2025 for an undisclosed fee.

After sporadic appearances in the second half of last season, he has started this term in fine nick.

The 21-year-old has scored four times in ten appearances in all competitions.

Lisbie mainly operates on the right-hand side of the attack, but can also play as a centre-forward.

The gaffer’s record

This weekend’s fixture will be the eighth time that Paul Cook will come up against Colchester United.

In the previous seven meetings, he has won four, drawn once and lost twice.

As manager of the Blues, Cook has only won one of the four games against Colchester – a 6-0 home win in 2015.

Man in the middle

Lee Swabey will take charge of this weekend’s fixture, his third game refereeing the Spireites.

The previous two fixtures have seen Chesterfield draw 1-1 against Colchester United in 2015/16 and beat Tranmere Rovers 3-0 in 2024/25.

In his 330 as the main referee, Swabey has handed out 1,073 yellow cards, 55 red cards, and has awarded 98 penalties.

Paddy Byrne’s thoughts

“Danny and Nicky Cowley set their teams up really well. The Colchester team that they’ve got now probably should have more points on the board than they do, based on the games that we’ve watched over the last number of days.

“They’ve got athleticism at the top end of the pitch, they can run, they can play long if they need to, they have players in the middle of the pitch that can handle the ball, players at the back that can help them build.”
