Comprehensive win for women’s team

Evie Carter’s first-half hat-trick fired Chesterfield to a comprehensive 7-0 win against Wellingborough Town on Sunday afternoon.

A double from Elin Morin, combined with strikes from Jess Waplington and Milly Wheldon, ensured that the Spireites stay top of the league, with Rotherham and Loughborough trailing closely behind.

Both sides came into this game at opposite ends of the form table, and the Spireites quickly found their rhythm with large spells of early possession.

And with ten minutes played, they made the possession count.

After the goalkeeper parried the initial strike, Morin was the first to react at the back post and tap home.

Less than 60 seconds later, Chesterfield doubled their advantage.

Morin’s in-swinging corner found Amy Nowell in the box, whose header cannoned off the back of Carter and nestled in the back of the net.

The away side continued to push for more, with Sophie Bain trying her luck from distance twice in quick succession.

In the 32nd minute, Waplington made it 3-0 to Chesterfield.

After a determined run from Carter, which ended in her shot being well saved by the goalkeeper, Waplington was alert to the rebound and finished from close range.

The Spireites then found another gear towards the end of the half with three quick goals, the first coming in the 38th minute.

It was great buildup play between Bain and Morin, with the latter squaring the ball to Carter, who emphatically finished from the middle of the box.

Three minutes later, Morin had her second.

Fidler fashioned a deft header straight into the winger’s path and she finished clinically into the far corner.

With the last kick of the half, Carter secured her hat-trick and made it 6-0.

The forward thundered a strike past the goalkeeper before she even had a chance to react.

After the break, Wellingborough had seemingly accepted their fate while Chesterfield appeared content to coast to victory.

Morin did have a chance to net her own hat-trick, but the effort skidded agonisingly wide.

In the 72nd minute, and with her first touch of the game, Wheldon volleyed home brilliantly from a corner to make it 7-0 to the Spireites.

Chesterfield saw the game out professionally from this point to record yet another resounding victory.

Next up is the hotly anticipated local derby against Mansfield Town on November 30, with the game to be held at Mansfield’s One Call Stadium.
