Full-back Alex Whittle is ready for a tough game when the Spireites travel to Meadow Park to face Boreham Wood tomorrow (7.45pm) and spoke about the squad depth as fixtures start piling up.
He said: “They did well last year obviously, they got into the play-offs. They have two good strikers and they are going to be a handful up top.
“It’s tight; you’ve got ten or 12 teams probably thinking that they can get play-offs. You’ve got to be on it every game in the National League or else you will get battered.
“We’ve got a big squad and it’s probably going to have to be rotated with all the games. It’s Saturday/Tuesday for the next six weeks, but I think we have the squad to cope with it.
“There’s a feel-good factor at the moment. There’s good momentum and we want to keep that going in every game. Take every game one game at a time and tomorrow is going to be a tough one.”
Whittle made his debut in the 2-1 win over Wrexham at the weekend and talked about the game and how his move to Chesterfield came about.
“I was delighted,” Whittle said. “It’s been a couple of weeks waiting to make my debut and the lads have been flying so in the back of my mind I was thinking that we needed to get a positive result.
“I get on with the gaffer quite well. I think I did well for him at Gloucester, so I bought in to what he brings and what he does.
“I think he gets the best out of yourself both as a person and as a player. You can talk to him on a normal level outside of football and on the pitch, it’s down to business. When he came in for me, I was delighted.
“Looking at the stadium now, it’s a massive club. They are striving to do well and have a good fanbase. Everything is there to do well and we’ve got be looking up.”
Akwasi Asante scored a match-winning brace against Wrexham, taking his total to six goals in seven appearances since signing for the Spireites.
The 27-year-old was full of praise for the striker, saying: “I was with Akwasi at Gloucester and he’s flying. He can’t stop scoring at the moment. He’s playing well as well. His hold-up game, his touch, you can tell he’s full of confidence at the moment.
“He’s on 14 or 15 goals [for the season] and long may that continue. He was flying in the league below and he is playing really well at the moment.”
