Ahead of the Spireites’ televised National League game at the weekend, manager James Rowe has highlighted the threat that Torquay United can pose.
Speaking with the media ahead of the fixture, he said: “We have to respect them; they aren’t going to be a pushover. Their points total so far isn’t a true reflection of the quality they have got in that squad and quality of management that they have got.
“It was only a few months ago that Torquay were in the play-off final and lost on penalties to get into the EFL. It’s going to be a great test for us and a good benchmark to see how far we’ve come.
“They’ve had a little bit of a layover from their unfortunate defeat in the [play-off] final. However, we must not rest on our laurels.
“They have got some good players. We know what weapons they’ve got, so we need to respect them and try and play with our DNA and make sure we entertain.”
Chesterfield sit at the top of the National League table after seven games with 17 points. Despite the good start, Rowe refuses to get carries away.
“It’s a good place to be. We want to be there after 44 [games] and we must remember that. It’s always a good benchmark, but it is only the start of the season,” he said.
“We were 22nd ten months ago, so in ten months we’ve managed to flip it around. If we can have similar form in the ten months leading forward, then we will be where we want to be.”
Manny Oyeleke and Gavin Gunning were both forced off with injuries against Yeovil Town and Rowe gave an update on the duo’s progress.
“We’re not sure on Manny at the moment,” Rowe stated. “He came off with a little bit of a knock on Saturday and he has trained, but we will see how he gets on today in terms of what part he can play tomorrow.
“Gavin came back into non-contact training yesterday. We need to have a look at him today. Hopefully, if everything goes to plan, he will be back and ready for selection tomorrow.”
On other injuries, the manager said: “Laurence Maguire is back in full training, and everything is fine, so he is available for selection. The team is in good spirits.
“Danny [Rowe] also trained on Tuesday and had a full session yesterday. He’s feeling stronger and he is available for selection as well.”
