In the summer of 2002, AFC Wimbledon were formed after the previous version of the club, Wimbledon FC, were relocated to Milton Keynes.
The Dons immediately sought after reclaiming their place in the Football League and started winning promotion after promotion.
In 2011, Wimbledon beat Fleetwood 8-1 on aggregate to advance to the National League play-off final. They came up against Luton Town and won promotion to League Two after winning 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw at Wembley Stadium.
Neal Ardley led the club to promotion once again in 2016 via another play-off final victory at Wembley. Adebayo Akinfenwa scored a stoppage time penalty to secure a 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.
The club suffered their first relegation under the AFC Wimbledon name last season as they dropped back in to League Two. A 27-league game winless run helped condemn the Dons to the fourth tier.
One to watch
Ayoub Assal joined AFC Wimbledon’s youth system back in 2011 upon leaving Millwall with his first-team debut coming in 2019 – a 3-1 loss to Southend United in the EFL Trophy. The attacking midfielder soon went out on loan to Metropolitan Police and Billericay Town respectively. Upon returning to the Dons’, he started to gradually make his way into the league matchday squad. After Assal experienced 14 league appearances in the 2019/20 season, the 20-year-old played 42 times in the following campaign, scoring eight goals. Unfortunately for him, Wimbledon suffered relegation to League Two. Assal has enjoyed life in League Two as he has become an important part of Johnnie Jackson’s squad. So far this season, the midfielder has nine goals in 25 appearances.

Ash Palmer, who has just joined from League Two Stockport County, could be in-line to make his debut for the Spireites in the FA Cup.
Thoughts from the dugout:
Danny Webb said: “I think they’re the favourites; they are on a very good run. We’ve watched them a few times and have seen what their strengths are.
“They’ve got some good players especially attacking wise. The pitch will be lovely down there which will suit us and them as well.”
