Chesterfield Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Rafiq Lamptey on a season-long loan deal from EFL Championship side Millwall.
The 19-year-old signs in North Derbyshire after a short but successful trial period, playing for the Spireites in their 2-2 pre-season draw against a Bohemians XI during pre-season.
Having been with the Lions’ U21 setup since the 2024/25 season, Lamptey makes the move as he looks to build his experience in senior football, adding a strong presence to the Paul Cook’s midfield options.
Upon joining the club, Lamptey said: “It feels good to be here. I’ve been speaking to the gaffer for about a week now and obviously I travelled to Dublin to see how everything is (within the squad).
“The boys have welcomed me well, I’ve spoken to the gaffer and the coaches and they’ve all welcomed me well. I even spoke to the owners; It was a really good conversation and it made me feel part of the club.
“When I spoke to him, instantly I knew that I wanted to be at this club.”
Explaining what supporters can expect to see out on the pitch, Lamptey added: “You’re going to see lots of tackles from me, that’s for sure. I’m composed on the ball, but you’re going to see aggression. Every time I go out on the pitch, I’m going to give my all.”
Coming from a footballing family with older brother Tariq Lamptey currently playing at QPR after spells with Brighton and Fiorentina, Rafiq spoke about how this benefits him as a young professional.
“It’s helped me massively,” he said. “Any time I’m struggling or need a few pointers I just ring him up. We speak literally every day, so I have that connection and bond with him.
“Having a brother like that is nice. It’s every guy’s dream really to have a brother you can learn from. It’s perfect, it’s brilliant.”
Assistant manager Danny Webb said: “Rafiq has spent a little bit of time with the club already and the observant fans will know that he played for us over in Ireland last week. He has settled into the group quickly and we were impressed with what we saw, so we are all pleased that he’s now here for the season.
“It’s beneficial for both the player and the club. Rafiq is going to get a fantastic amount of experience this season and we’re getting someone who is hungry to play and have a successful season.”
