Chesterfield FC U21s 3 Borrowash Victoria AFC U21s 2
Chesterfield were victorious in the U21 North Midlands Spring Cup Final on Thursday evening at the Halbrook Stadium, home of Eastwood Community FC. The goals were scored by Ross McParland, Kallan Murphy and Louis Czerwak.
Our U21s had an early scare when Knight’s free kick went just over the bar. However, Chesterfield took the lead on eight minutes when the impressive McParland, chasing a long ball, chipped the hesitant keeper and headed the ball over the line.
Shortly afterwards, Kian Tansley nearly added to Chesterfield’s advantage when his superb free kick hit the bottom of a post, but unfortunately went wide.
Borrowash restored parity in the 16th minute when Knight turned in the box and slotted home.
The Spireites now began to dominate and following a strong run on the wing a Jacob Barrass shot just went over the bar.
On 23 minutes, the hardworking Irishman Murphy produced a shot from outside the area which went in off a post to give the young Spireites a 2-1 lead.
The best move of the game came a minute later when Dylan Wharton’s long kick found McParland, who beat a defender and passed to Murphy, whose shot went over the bar.
Chesterfield added to the score eight minutes before half-time when a Czerwak shot curled over the keeper to make it 3-1.
Following a mix-up between Wharton and a Chesterfield defender, Borrowash’s Morley pulled a goal back to make it a nervy last 30 minutes.
Manager Neil Cluxton then introduced all seven substitutes and Chesterfield had to dig deep.
Further chances fell to Murphy who headed wide and Czerwak, whose shot was well saved by the Borrowash keeper.
The final chance fell to the lively Knight on 85 minutes, but a good save by Wharton and stout defending by the back line, superbly marshalled by Callum Brook, ensured Chesterfield took home the silverware.
Following the final whistle, jubilant scenes were witnessed as medals were given to all the Chesterfield players, a fitting reward for all their hard work in this rather strange season.
