It has been an exciting few weeks for the academy women. Victories have been earned against both sides of Sheffield, and there is a testing cup fixture to come against a Premier Division side.
Last week a brilliant performance saw Chesterfield convincingly overcome Sheffield Wednesday 6-0. A hat trick from Butterworth, two from Watts and a goal from Thompson ensured three points for the Spireites.
Pepper, Watermans Player of the Match, said: “We played really well as a team and worked really hard for each other. We were clinical and played brilliant through balls all game. It is the best I have seen us play.”
On Tuesday afternoon, the Spireites made it two wins from two after edging to a 1-0 win at home to Sheffield United.
Chesterfield captain Harrison netted a phenomenal free-kick in the first half, and the in-form Blues were able to keep out the Blades to secure maximum points again.
Cowperthwaite, who finally returned from injury against Sheffield United, said: “We all played brilliantly together. Our passing was really good, and we were all on the same page throughout the game.”
Next week, the academy women will take on Everton in the National Football Youth Women’s Cup.
In the previous round, Chesterfield beat Wath Women’s Academy 2-1 away from home to set up this round’s test.
Everton will give the Spireites a tough game, as the Toffees sit top of the Premier Division.
Looking ahead to the game, Pepper said: “I think we need to go (into the game) with a really positive mindset and go in thinking we can win. We need to get our heads down and play like we have done for the last few games.”
The aim is set for the academy women to produce the shock of the round, and to progress further in the cup.
