Chesterfield FC Women put up a good fight in attempting to secure a place in the Derbyshire Cup final before losing 1-0 away against Derby County Women.
As the game began, both sides battled hard in midfield to attempt to get a hold of the game. However, in the seventh minute, from the first corner of the game, the hosts scored when the ball was whipped to the far post and it was headed into the net.
Derby remained in control of the game and put pressure on the Spireites.
Chesterfield grew in confidence and had a chance to reply when Graham latched onto a loose ball but she failed to find the net.
The Spireites ended the half the stronger of the two sides and started the second period in similar fashion, having more possession and looking more organised.
Unfortunately, though, the Spireites struggled to make it count in the final third and tasted defeat for the first time since October.
Derby have not lost a game in all competitions this season and have a goal difference of +47.
To only lose by such a fine margin meant the players could hold their heads high, leaving manager Andrea Parkinson pleased with the overall performance.
She said: “They couldn’t break us down and we were solid defensively – we just struggled in the final third today.
“I am very proud of every single one of my players and they should be proud of themselves, Derby have been together a long time, and we have only been together for 20 months.
“To put on a display like that and only lose by one goal is nothing to be ashamed of.”
The Spireites will regroup and focus on their match away at Farsley Celtic next Sunday.
