John Pemberton was pleased to be able to reflect on a return to action after Jonathan Smith scored twice in a 3-2 victory at Belper Town to get the pre-season programme off to a winning start.
The Spireites boss said: “It’s just nice to get on the pitch and get playing again. I think they did alright, seeing that they’ve not been together for six months.
“Literally, the group has been together for five days. It’s a work in progress at the moment.”
New signing Milan Butterfield was also on target for the Spireites. Commenting on the Bermuda international midfielder’s performance, Pemberton said: “Milan will get better. I think you can see what he’ll bring to the team.
“He’s just understanding his team-mates. Only four days ago, half the team hadn’t seen Milan as they’ve been in three bubbles.”
When asked about Smith’s contribution, Pemberton added: “I think Jonathan has been brilliant and that’s the reason I brought him back in again.
“He’s full of endeavour and he can finish. His first goal was a good strike and his second was out of this world.”
