“It’s all set to be a really cracking game”

First-team coach Gary Roberts spoke exclusively with 1866+ ahead of the Boxing Day clash with Notts County.

After a 1-0 away win over Shrewsbury on Saturday, the Spireites head into the fixture following back-to-back League Two victories.

He said: “We went there and they had a couple of chances early doors, but I think after that we were worthy winners of the game.

“It’s a great win for us on the road. Any win on the road is good. It’s not easy to go to their ground and win and they were five unbeaten at home, so to go there and win is really pleasing.”

With Lee Bonis reaching ten goals for the season, the first-team coach spoke of the importance of the striker’s form.

Heading into the Notts County game, he added: “Strikers will always tell you they’d want ten goals before Christmas,” he said. “Early season his performances were good, but the goals weren’t really coming and now they’re marrying up.

“He’s still working as hard for the team and he’s getting his fruit in front of goal now.”

Heading into the big game, he added: “We’ve had some terrific games over the years with Notts County.

“We’ve both come through the leagues together, even getting beat at Wembley. It was a really good game. It was nearly done, we were nearly there and they pulled it back.

“We’ve had good wins at their place. They’ve come here and we’ve had good battles and I think Boxing Day will be no different.

“They’ve got some really good players and as much as they’ve changed a little bit since Luke Williams and Stuart Maynard, they’re still a top team and they’ll come here trying their best to win the game and so will we.”

Lastly, expecting a sell-out crowd for the game, Roberts said: “We always turn out, especially over Christmas.

“It’s a great game, probably the game of the weekend in our division, especially for our fans. So hopefully they have a good Christmas, turn up and make some noise because it’s all set to be a really cracking game.”
