“It’s nice to be back”

Gary Roberts has spoken about returning to the Spireites after it was announced on Thursday that the former midfielder had rejoined the club as a coach, after seven years away.

Speaking exclusively to 1866 Sport, he said: “It’s nice to be back. There are some people from previously when I was here. It’s nice to see a few old faces. Straight into work, straight back into it with Wealdstone away.

“Not too much has changed since I was last here. Obviously, the league status has and that’s one thing we are trying to sort out.

“Looking at the squad, there’s some good players here. I’ve seen in training the last couple of days that we’ve got some good players.

“There are some good lads coming back. Horrendous injury record this year which has taken its toll a little bit. Hopefully we can get back to winning ways.”

Chesterfield are currently embroiled in a frantic battle for promotion to the EFL and Roberts spoke about what they need to do.

Roberts said: “The teams at the top at the minute, Stockport and Wrexham, they are really strong teams. I’ve seen Stockport a couple of times over the past couple of weeks and they are a well organised team.

“It’ll be a good end to the season. We’re positive. We’ll get a couple more lads back hopefully and we’ll kick on.

“It’s our job to try and catch them and if not, we’ll get into the play-offs and try and do it that way. The aim is to get out of this league as it was when the manager came in. “
