Jones becomes 12th summer signing

Experienced midfielder Mike Jones has become the latest addition to Paul Cook’s squad, signing a one-year-deal after impressing on trial.

The Spireites’ 12th summer signing joins after leaving Barrow at the end of the 2021/22 season.

On joining the club, Jones said: “I’m absolutely buzzing to get it all done and get it signed. I’ve been here since the very start [of pre-season] so I feel already settled in.

“Looking forward to the season now. Having being here since day one, I’ve felt part of the squad. They’ve made it a really easy transition for me.

“They are a great bunch of lads – there is a great mix there. A bunch of young lads, some older ones and a lot of talent so I’m really excited.”

Jones started his career with Tranmere Rovers, signing his first professional contract at Prenton Park in 2006.

He spent two years with Rovers and had a loan spell with Shrewsbury Town before making the move to then League Two outfit Bury.

The midfielder played over 150 times in his four years at Gigg Lane, scoring 23 goals as well and helping the club to promotion to League One in 2011 – a 3-2 win at the Technique Stadium against Chesterfield confirming that achievement.

He continued to play in the Football League, gaining more and more experience with the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Crawley Town, Oldham Athletic and Carlisle United.

Jones joined Barrow in July 2020 and struggled to play regular first-team football due to bad luck with injuries.

Upon leaving the League Two side at the end of the previous campaign, the 34-year-old joined Chesterfield on a trial basis and impressed the managerial team during pre-season.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Gavin Gunning and George Carline have now left the club. We thank both for their efforts and wish them well for the future.
