Manager delighted with performance

Following the Spireites’ comprehensive 6-0 victory at home to Barnet, manager James Rowe gave his thoughts on what was complete performance from the Blues.

He said: “It was a close game, first half, we probably edged it. The second half, we just blew them away.

“The pass for the second goal, the diagonal with Joel [Taylor] taking it on the chest and getting round the back is something we have worked on.

“It’s what we are all about and that’s what we want to instil. We want to run harder than the opposition and you get your rewards when you do that.

“If we have got six goals, I want seven. I want a clean sheet at the other end and that’s what we have got to do. We were cutthroat today and that’s what we want to be. It’s another step in the right direction, but we won’t get carried away.”

Akwasi Asante scored his first hat-trick for Chesterfield with three well-taken goals and Rowe was impressed the striker’s variety.

“Three different goals, three different types of finishes,” he said. “He deserved them all and It comes from hard work.

“His hat-trick goal comes from a 50-yard sprint to keep the ball in play and get round the back like that. We want to be high energy.”

Another standout performer was Jak McCourt, who had a hand in creating a few of the goals as well as scoring one.

Rowe was delighted with the midfielder’s performance, saying: “It’s no fluke but the technical ability of Jak for two of the goals is outstanding. It’s hard to pick a Man of the Match but Jak McCourt was outstanding.

“It was underlined by the 60-yard run at the end to get the last goal, two yards from the goalline. That’s what we want, with and without the ball.”
