“We’ve got to be a bit more ruthless”

John Pemberton spoke of his disappointment at the two goals his side conceded after the Spireites fell to a 2-1 home defeat to Maidenhead United.

He said: “I thought we started off well. We were okay, we were good. In the second half, we knew what was coming.

“The first goal was a poor goal. I don’t know what we were doing, it trickles in at the far corner. For the second goal, we lose a man.

“We had chances; we could’ve scored. We could have gone in front, but we didn’t. We’ve got to be a bit more ruthless. The two goals have killed us and they are poor goals.

“We’ve got to lick our wounds because we’ve got another game on Tuesday.”

Scott Boden started for the first time since the opening day of the season and marked his return with a well-taken goal on the half-hour mark.

Commenting on the striker’s performance, Pemberton said: “I thought he and Denton were a handful in the first half.

“I thought they linked up really well. He took his goal well. It’s a great goal, a good finish.”

Pemberton also gave a first start to the season to Joe Rowley, who impressed the Chesterfield manager during his 89 minutes on the pitch.

On the midfielder’s performance, he said: “I thought Joe did good as well. He linked up well with the team.

“Joe’s like everybody else. He’s part of the squad and he works hard and trains hard. He fitted what we needed today and I thought he did well.”
