“We won’t underestimate them”

Ahead of the Spireites’ game at home to Weymouth on Saturday, manager James Rowe stressed the importance of using the strong run of form at the Technique Stadium to their advantage.

Speaking to the media about Weymouth, he said: “They’re on a little bit of an unbeaten streak. I had no doubts that they would get to that stage.

“They had a bit of a rocky start, but they’ve got some talented players. They are going to be coming here full of belief and we won’t underestimate them – we never do.

“We’ve got to make sure we play the way we have, in terms of explosive starts; really get on the front foot and try and get our DNA in our performance.

“We’ve got a really strong home record and we want to use that. Let’s use the positivity to get another positive result but being aware that we have to respect the opponent.”

Chesterfield were given an away tie at League Two Salford City in the second round of the FA Cup and Rowe is looking forward to going head-to-head with a Football League team.

“You always want to pit your wits against teams in the leagues above,” he said. “We want to make memories so hopefully we can make more FA Cup memories for this great club.

“It’s a one-off, it’s an FA Cup tie, it’s exciting. We’ve changed that mindset.

“We’ve got a lot of hope going on. I’m sure we’ll get a great following and it’s going to be a great day.”

Skipper Gavin Gunning signed a deal until the summer of 2024 in midweek and the gaffer talked about the value the defender brings to the club as well as an injury update.

Rowe said: “Gavin’s position and the influence he has had on the team, on the environment and who he is as a person is the lynchpin of what we are trying to do here.

“He represents a lot of the team values that we have got. He’s a great guy to have around here. It’s probably the best bit of business I’ve done since I’ve been here to tie him down for the future.

“He’s gone for surgery today. There was a delay on the surgery because they weren’t sure on the eye socket.

“There was a link between a fractured nose and a fractured eye socket and the nerve connecting as well. We’re looking at the New Year at best.”
