Match preview: FC Halifax Town (a)

The Spireites face their biggest game of the season this evening, when they travel to The Shay to take on FC Halifax Town in a National League play-off eliminator. Paul Cook has backed the boys to get a result and says there is “no reason” why the Blues can’t go on to win promotion back to the Football League. However, with the squad currently thin on numbers, it’s set to be tough game and a tricky selection for the gaffer.

Manny Oyeleke will be unavailable for this fixture, as Paul Cook has ruled him out for the play-offs due to a knee injury. 

Luke Croll could be back in contention for a place in the squad. The defender has been out since February with a knee injury but could be set to make a return to the bench. 

Akwasi Asante will be hoping that he can pass a fitness test ahead of the fixture. The striker has been struggling with a calf problem but will be hoping he is back in contention for a place in the side. Joe Quigley will also be hoping for a place in the squad.

Meanwhile, Kabongo Tshimanga will not feature in this fixture. Despite hope that the striker could return for the play-offs, the gaffer has since ruled that out.

On FC Halifax Town

Huge tax debts buried Halifax Town AFC after almost 100 years as a football club. The club was then reformed as FC Halifax Town in 2008 and they have been fighting their way back up the football pyramid ever since. 

Halifax have been floating in and around the National League for several years and have endured several campaigns fighting for promotion. They went close in the 2019/20 season, finishing in the play-offs, but subsequently losing to Boreham Wood in the semi-finals.

One to watch

Jordan Slew is a former Spireites striker, renowned for his lightning quick pace. He played for the Spireites back in 2016, making seven appearances. He signed for FC Halifax Town in 2021, and has made 25 appearances and scored 10 goals so far. His former clubs include Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers, and Rotherham United.
