The Opposition
Fact file
Name: Torquay United Football Club
Nicknames: The Gulls
Founded: 1899
Stadium: Plainmoor
Capacity: 6,200
Manager: Gary Johnson
On Torquay United
Torquay United Football Club were formed in 1899 by a bunch of school- leavers before playing their inaugural match against Upton Cricket Club XI.
1927 brought election to the Football League for the first time in the club’s history in which they stayed for 80 years.
It didn’t take long for the Gulls to return to the promised land – beating Cambridge United 2-0 at Wembley in the Conference play-off final.
Another relegation followed in 2014 and once more in 2019, which saw Torquay drop into the National League South.
One season is all it took for Gary Johnson’s side to reclaim their place in the fifth tier of English football.
A promotion looked on the cards in 2021 but they had to settle for the play-offs. Goalkeeper Lucas Covolan scored in the play-off final defeat to Hartlepool United.
One to watch
Torquay United have lost a few of their key players over the summer, however, Asa Hall has been one of the club’s most important players over the past few years. Before joining the Gulls in 2018, he gained vital Football League and National League experience. The midfielder joined the club whilst they were still in the National League North, and he enjoyed a wildly successful season as Gary Johnson’s side won promotion at the first attempt. His 2019/20 season was mostly hampered by injury before COVID-19 curtailed the campaign. Hall experienced his best year in a yellow shirt the season after as Torquay challenged for the title – he scored 15 goals in 44 games before they were defeated in the play-off final by Hartlepool. The Gulls’ 2021/22 season was more of a transition campaign with the 35-year-old still providing six goals in 30 league games. So far this campaign, Hall has still provided a threat for the Devon side with three goals in 13 games.

Last Time We Met
With the 2021/22 National League season rapidly coming to an end, the Spireites travelled down to Plainmoor in hopes of securing a play-off place. Unfortunately, Paul Cook’s side would have to wait until the final day of the campaign to claim that right as second half goals from Stephen Duke-McKenna and Armani Little gave Torquay a 2-0 win.
Team News
Laurence Maguire was missing from the matchday squad against Northampton Town due to him carrying a knock.
Danny Webb said in the pre-match press conference that Akwasi Asante, Ollie Banks and Lucas Covolan are all still ‘a few weeks’ away due to their respective injuries.
Danny Webb’s Thoughts
Webb said: “They can come back. They showed that against Derby and again the other night. They don’t give up.
“They are a physically strong team. I think it will be completely different from the end of last season. I think we’ll be a lot better than we were.”
