The Opposition
Fact file
Name: Dorking Wanderers Football Club
Nicknames: The Wanderers
Founded: 1999
Stadium: Meadowbank
Capacity: 3,000
Manager: Marc White
On Dorking Wanderers
Saturday’s opposition were founded in 1999 by owner and first-team manager Marc White and the club have won several promotions up the English football pyramid since. The club won promotion to the National League South in 2019 and only spent two completed seasons in the league before winning yet another promotion.
After having promotion taken away from them when the season was curtailed in 2021, Dorking came back to fight for the title once again. Despite trying their hardest, White’s side was pipped to the championship by Maidstone United. However, a dramatic play-off final win against Ebbsfleet United gave Dorking promotion to the National League for the first time in the club’s history. They currently sit in lower midtable as their first ever season in fifth tier nears the halfway point.
One to watch
Alongside Ryan Seager, James McShane is one of two Dorking players to have bagged more than two goals so far this season. McShane has allowed goals to flow freely from the midfield and has changed games with his contributions – including a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory over Notts County. The 32-year-old may not attract as much Football League interest as Alfie Rutherford or the aforementioned Seager, but the versatile midfielder is a big reason as to why Marc White’s side have a sizeable gap over the relegation zone. McShane also score during the 2-2 draw with Chesterfield on the first day of the season.
