Spireites earn a point at Wrexham

The Spireites picked up a point on the road at Wrexham following a 1-1 draw, but will be disappointed they didn’t leave with all three.

The game got off to a lively start when Bryce Hosannah found space on the right-hand side of the area, his shot was low and hard towards the bottom corner but was well matched by Scott Loach.

Seconds later the Spireites found themselves ahead, after Jeff King’s free kick found Gaving Gunning at the back post, who nodded the ball back across the goal, where Fraser Kerr headed home to put the Blues ahead in the fifth minute.

Kabongo Tshimanga went through on goal halfway through the second half with a chance to double the lead, but the keeper got down low and made a great save to deny the striker.

There were big penalty appeals for the Spireites minutes later, as Tshimanga went through on goal again. He was bundled over in the area as he shot, which was well saved, but the referee waved the appeals away.

The Spireites were awarded a penalty just before the half-time whistle, after Tshimanga rounded the keeper and was brought down. However, the striker saw his penalty saved by Rob Lainton.

Wrexham piled the pressure on late into the half, but the Blues went into the break ahead.

Tshimanga went close again early in the second half, when he saw his shot from the edge of the area well blocked on the six-yard box.

The game fell flat in the mid stages of the second half, as both teams struggled to gain any momentum.

In the 73rd minute, Danny Rowe saw his shot creep just over the crossbar from range.

Seconds later, Tshimanga found himself free on the penalty spot, but could only direct his effort straight at the keeper, which was comfortably saved.

Wrexham got their equaliser in the 83rd minute, when a long throwing found Paul Mullin free inside the area, who headed home.

Carline was then stretched off in the 90th minute, with what looked like a serious leg injury.

Wrexham pushed hard for a winner, but couldn’t find it, as the game finished level and the Spireites picked up a well-earned point on the road.
