Winning start at Weymouth for new boss

James Rowe got off to the perfect start as manager as the Spireites came from a goal down to beat Weynouth 2-1 at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Rowe made four changes with Kyle Letheren, Haydn Hollis, Joe Rowley and new signing Akwasi Asante making the starting XI.

Asante started looking dangerous from the off. The striker received two knock downs from Tom Denton but the debutant had both efforts saved by Gerard Benfield.

Chesterfield continued to threaten when Jonathan Smith’s long-range effort forced a good save from Benfield. Asante was the first to respond but they Weymouth goalkeeper made another impressive save.

The hosts started to get into the game just after the hour-mark; Cody Cooke rose highest from a cross but his effort went wide of the post.

Against the run of play, Weymouth took the lead in the 39th minute when Sean Shields let fly from the edge of the area and the ball zoomed past Letheren.

However, on the stoke of half time, the Spireites were level. Denton and Asante linked up again with the latter taking the ball and firing his shot home via a post.

The second half started at a relatively slow pace with neither side being able to create chances. Rowe made his first substitution in the 55th minute with Liam Mandeville coming on for Rowley.

Immediately Mandeville floated a ball into the penalty area for Will Evans. The defender headed back to Asante but Benfield made a swift save to deny the striker.

However, the Spireites finally took the lead on the hour-mark. A fantastic early ball landed on the head of Denton, who nodded home for his eighth goal of the season.

Substitute Scott Boden was given a great chance to kill off the game with just ten minutes to go. He was played through by Smith, but his chipped effort went over the bar.

The Blues defended resolutely and saw the game out brilliantly to get Rowe off to a winning start.

The Spireites next face Aldershot Town on Tuesday night at the Technique Stadium in the National League.
