Danny Webb spoke about how Max Thompson’s loan signing came about and how a former Chesterfield goalkeeper helped facilitate the move.
Speaking to the media, he said: “He is someone that ‘Bucky’, the goalkeeping coach, and the scouting department have had their eye on for a bit.
“There’s a relationship with Shwan Jalal from Newcastle, who used to play at Chesterfield when Bucky was here.
“I think the biggest thing was understanding that Ryan Boot has done really well. We’ve let two goals in in three league games, which is a really good return.
“Max certainly hasn’t come in just to sit on the bench, but he probably understands at the moment that Ryan’s earned the shirt.”
Similar to last season with Harry Tyrer and Ryan Boot, it seems as if the latter and Thompson will compete for the number one shirt.
Webb said: “Max isn’t coming in to replace Ryan; he’s coming into compete with him. They both know.
“Ryan will know that he has Max breathing down his neck and vice-versa. Usually, healthy competition is a good thing, and we’re hoping that echoes here.
“Gaffer hasn’t picked his team for Gillingham, so he could well play. Who knows?”
Thompson joined up in training on Thiursday and Webb spoke about the character that young shot-stopper has already shown.
“He seems a nice lad; first time I met him on Thursday,” he said.
“I know that Bucky came in with him on Wednesday and showed him around.
“He’s very polite, very humble. He knows that Ryan Boot is a very good goalkeeper, so there certainly isn’t an air of expectancy or arrogance from him that he’s just going to walk into it.”
