Academy graduate reflects on facing Premier League opposition

Academy graduate George Wilkinson, who only signed a professional contract this summer, was delighted to be given a run-out against Premier League Sheffield United at the weekend.

The 19-year-old has been with the Spireites since joining as an under-9 and made an appearance for the first-team last season, scoring a goal in the FA Trophy fixture against Coalville Town.

George was rewarded for his hard work with a professional contract, alongside Alexander Duhameau, Sam Hooper and Archie White.

He spoke about the moment he found out he was coming on in Saturday’s game, saying: “It was absolutely amazing; I really didn’t expect to be playing against a Premier League side this season.

“It was a brilliant experience for me and I couldn’t really believe it. It was only 15 minutes but it was great.

“He [Paul Cook] told me during the game that I was going to be coming on and getting some minutes so to get ready, I was thinking to myself, ‘these are top quality strikers to come on against’! I was really excited for it.

“I wasn’t really that nervous, actually. You’ve just got to get on with it and take the experience. I came on and enjoyed it. It was a great experience.”

George also touched on pre-season so far. “I’ve found it really fun and enjoyable,” he said.

“I had a little injury early on but I’ve sorted that now and got past it so I’m feeling good. I’m ready to kick on and get the season started – it’s an exciting time.

“I would say it is a little different to the youth team pre-season. The standard is obviously tougher and higher. I guess it’s because this is everyone’s jobs in the first-team.

“I have to say that [Jamie] Grimes has been fantastic with me and the rest of the younger lads. He’s a top professional and a great guy. The whole squad have been fantastic with me, to be fair, it’s a real good group.”

Finally, George looked towards the season and what he’s hoping for personally. He said: “I’m obviously hoping to get some first-team minutes.

“It would be great but the standard is so high so I guess I’ve just got to work hard and see what happens.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute so far, so I’m really looking forward to the season beginning. I have lots to learn and I’m excited for the season ahead.”
