This Sunday sees Chesterfield FC Women have the opportunity to not only to play at the SMH Group Stadium, but also clinch the league title. Victory against SJR Worksop in the game, which kicks-off at 2pm, will guarantee that Pete Jarvis’s side become Champions of the Tier Five East Midlands Regional League Premier Division.
In their 16th and final League game of the campaign, CFCW are looking for their 12th win, and the three points would ensure second placed Loughborough Foxes Vixens, who have two games left and are the only team to have beaten the Spireites in the competition, cannot overhaul the title favourites.
SJR, which stands for St Joseph’s Rockware, representing their original name and home ground, managed a draw against Chesterfield early in the season, and whilst they are just one place above the relegation zone, they are sure to be wanting to upset the home applecart.
The manager has brought together a team that features plenty of youth and experience. The two leading scorers for the club in league matches, 14-goal striker Evie Carter and flying winger Elin Morin, who has scored nine and assisted countless others, are both teenagers in their first seasons as senior players, whilst the very experienced Jess Waplington, who’s a bit of a super-sub, has scored seven this term after joining from Mansfield Town last summer, having previously played for Rise Park and Nottingham Forest Development.
Long serving Chesterfield player, Millie Standen, is the captain and can boast the most Player of the Match Awards this season for her consistent hard work in midfield, whilst central defender Amy Nowell, in her first season with the club after joining from Rotherham United last summer, has scored six, many with her head from set pieces.
Tickets and hospitality are available for the match here.
If you’re unable to attend, free commentary will be on 1866 Sport, with the programme staring at 1pm. If you plan to be in the stadium, bring your earphones to listen in, and during the build up you can here from one of the founders of the club back in 1991, Jane Haslam, who helped develop many international players in her time working for the Football Association.
Also in the build-up will be interviews with the manager, a couple of players and the Community Trust’s Keith Jackson who has helped develop women’s football in Chesterfield.
