Comfortable victory over York City

The Spireites secured an emphatic 4-0 win over York City at the SMH Group Stadium. Second-half goals from Ollie Banks, Tom Naylor and a brace from Will Grigg meant that the Spireites march forward at the top of the National League.

Paul Cook made five changes from the 5-0 win over Kettering Town with Liam Mandeville, Tyrone Williams, Jamie Grimes, Mike Jones and Armando Dobra coming into the side.

Grimes made his 100th league appearance for the Spireites.

It was a cagey game in the opening ten minutes, with neither side creating any clear chances.

Banks had a good effort from range that Rory Watson had to tip wide for a corner.

The Spireites came close when Grigg pulled the ball back to Dobra inside the penalty area and he glanced the ball towards goal, forcing a great save from Watson.

Michael Jacobs tried to place the ball into the bottom corner when the ball fell to him, following a corner, but Watson dived down to his left to make a good save.

The score going into had time was 0-0, with clear-cut chances hard to come by for both sides.

The Spireites came agonisingly close to taking the lead early in the second half when Jacobs’ cross from the right-hand side found Grigg in the box and his header hit the bar.

Banks put the Spireites into the lead in the 49th minute. The midfielder received the ball on the right-hand side of the box and drilled the ball into the bottom left corner.

The Spireites doubled their lead in the 61st minute with a fantastic goal from Naylor. The ball fell to Naylor around 25 yards out and he volleyed the ball first time into the bottom corner.

That goal makes Naylor the Spireites’ top scorer so far this season.

Grigg made it three for the Spireites after being the first to react to a rebound, following a good save from a Banks shot on the edge of the box. Grigg was in the right place at the right time to tap the ball away.

Grigg doubled his tally, making it four for the Spireites. He dispossessed Watson on the edge of his area, on the right-hand side, near the corner flag, and managed to squeeze the ball into an open net from a very tight angle.

Attention will now turn to this Saturday’s away trip to Kidderminster Harriers.
